The chief Medical Director, Professor Jesse Otegbayo recently inspected the University College Hospital Zonal Tuberculosis Reference Laboratory.
The Laboratory serves as a hub for diagnosis and drug sensitivity tests for tuberculosis in the South – West Zone of Nigeria.
He was recently received by the Head, Department of Medical Microbiology, Prof. Aderemi Oludiram Kehinde who led him on a guided tour of the laboratory. Professor Kehinde is the local PI for the research consortium named West African Network for TB, AIDS, and Malaria (WANETAM)
While on the tour, Prof Kehinde disclosed that the renovation and reequipping of the laboratory was fully funded by WANETAM as part of the EDCTP programme supported by the European Union.
He expressed the belief that the renovation and equipping of the laboratory will ultimately help to attain the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) accreditation and certification.
In his response, Prof Otegbayo lauded the long partnership between the laboratory and its research partners. He said: “partnership is one of my policy thrust, it is important in making progress, we can not do it alone, we need collaborators and partners to help fund and drive research endeavours, this is commendable.”
